Beth's Library - Book List

Let me introduce you to some of my best friends…

Sometimes I can't wait to read a much-coveted book (books are like chocolate that way) and I just have to buy it! I thought it would be cool to provide you with instant gratification by becoming an Amazon.com affiliate and installing direct links to Amazon for all of our library's book titles.

Alas, not all cravings can be satiated quickly (Amazon ships in 24 hours!), so for all out-of-print books Amazon will try to find it for you through their many affiliates that deal in rare books. Don't despair; someone out there has it for sale!

And, last but certainly not least, is the autodidact's true ace, inter-library loan! If you don't mind a wait, order the book through your library's inter-library loan program. If you don't know how to order an ILL, read my succinct (ha!) explanation on this same page under inter-library loan.

MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES THEORY

Frames of Mind, Howard Gardner
Gardner, the author of multiple intelligences theory, is a pioneer in academia. His work has spawned an entirely new approach to education that is beginning to gain acceptance from even the most conservative school systems. His theory as outlined by this book describes the seven variations of intelligence. Linguistic, musical, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, inter-personal and intra-personal are possessed by us all to varying degrees. Gardner draws upon other cultures and historical figures to illustrate the different intelligences. His style is somewhat technical and academic but still approachable. Read this book to see how your child is special.

In Their Own Way, Thomas Armstrong
Written by a learning disabilities specialist, this book celebrates the differences in children. His opinions of learning disabilities in children changed radically after six years of working with them when he came to the realization that it is the failing of our educational institutions that is creating their problems! Armstrong shows many of the ways to help children grow using their abilities and talents rather than focusing on their weaknesses. Get the kid out of the school and his/her "problem behavior" may just disappear, eh?

Seven Kinds of Smart: Identifying and Developing Your Many Intelligences, Thomas Armstrong
Ok, for all of you who read Howard Gardner and didn't get it because his writing is so academic, this is your guide to multiple intelligences theory. Armstrong translates MI theory into everyday usage through phrasing such as "music smart" and "word smart." Michael Jordan is definitely body-smart and Mozart was music-smart, which smart are you? He incorporates strategies for discovering your hidden strengths and those of your children.
