GAME MATERIALS: Cassettes or CDs of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Gershwin, Bach, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Handel, Chopin and Rachmaninov…(feel free to add to the list)
HOW TO PLAY: One person inserts a tape or CD into the stereo or portable boom box and fast-forwards it to their chosen song. The rest of the family tries to identify the composer (this is not as easy as it seems!!!!)
Note: Everyone quickly became familiar with the most popular works of each composer and could guess accurately when they heard those works. The game can be played on an easy level when only those popular works are used as cues. As our family became familiar with each composer's unique style, we found it easier to identify less well-known works of the composers and the difficulty of the game progressed with our identification skills. Thus, this game serves families of varying ages and musical proficiencies. Fast-forwarding the tape or CD enables the MUSIC MASTER to challenge his/her family.
HOW TO WIN: The person who correctly identifies the composer becomes the next MUSIC MASTER. He/she may then choose a new composer to play. As the game develops its own rhythm and seems to be self-limiting, no-one actually wins. Rather, we played until were tired of the game or until we got stumped and no one could figure out the composer (Antony was especially tricky with fast-forwarding into a tape and playing some obscure piece that left us all scratching our heads.) |
